DUXW Challenge – Day 12

Day 12 of the Daily UX Writing challenge. This is a bit unfortunate.

The challenge is as follows:

  • Scenario: A user is creating an account. When they come to the step where they are asked to enter their name, they get an error message. A fraud detection software thinks their name is fake—but it’s wrong 5% of the time.
  • Challenge: Write an error message that prompts them to fix the error without shaming them for having a fake-sounding name.
  • Characters: 45 max

My thought process

This is a really bad experience for users and embarrassing for this company’s selection of fraud detection software. It looks like it isn’t equipped to handle diverse names. Sigh.

I made the app take the fall for the error, but the burden is on the user to ‘fix’ their name. The character constraint on the challenge did not allow for the opportunity for the user to create an account anyway or to submit a support ticket. Otherwise I would have included such messaging.
